Whether you've just purchased a brand-new hauler or a pre-owned gem, one of the most critical steps in the process is getting it legally registered. In Arizona, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has a straightforward process, but it's vital to have all your paperwork in order. This A-Z checklist will ensure you are prepared and ready to get your trailer on the road.
Step 1: The Basics of Arizona Title and Registration
Arizona law requires you to apply for a title for your trailer within 15 days of purchase. You can do this at an MVD office or an Authorized Third Party provider. Keep in mind that Arizona now uses an electronic title system, so you won't automatically receive a paper title. You can view your title information in your AZ MVD Now account, and if you need a paper title for any reason, you can request one for a small fee.
Step 2: Required Documents
To transfer the title and registration, you will need the following items :

A completed and signed Title and Registration Application.

A signed vehicle title.

A lien release, if applicable.

All applicable title and registration fees.

Any other required documents, such as a power of attorney, if needed.
If there is a lien on the vehicle, you'll need written permission from the lienholder to add or remove a name from the title.
Step 3: Understanding Your Registration Options
Trailer registrations in Arizona are determined by their declared weight and intended use. Trailers can be registered for one, two, or five years. For certain trailers, a permanent registration option is available, which requires a one-time fee and a permanent PERM license plate tab.

Permanent Registration: Trailers with a declared Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of more than 10,000 pounds are eligible for permanent registration, which requires a one-time fee of $800. This fee is reduced for trailers that were previously registered in another state. With a permanent registration, there are no annual vehicle license tax or registration fees.

Trailers Not Eligible for Permanent Registration: Not all trailers qualify. Travel trailers, camper/tent trailers, and commercial trailers with a GVW of 10,000 pounds or less are not eligible for permanent registration.
